April 2, 2008 Are you glad April Fool's Day is over? Did you have any pranks pulled on you? Or were you the joker? Lucky for me, I made it through the whole day safe! I hope you all enjoyed what is supposed to be a fun and silly day! My next topic is no joking matter though. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. This is a time to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and to encourage those around you to support children and families. Abuse of a child is any non-accidental injury or putting a child in danger of physical injury. Many of us may not be aware of this, but there are many jobs where you are required by law in the state of California to report child abuse and neglect. If you fail to do so and are one of the qualifying employees, you may have a price to pay as well. For more information on these particular positions, click here . You as a regular old person of society can help probably more than you know. If you are seeing a fellow Mom who is going through a tough time, lend her a hand. It can be something as simple as allowing her kids to come along to the park with your kids, that you were going to go to anyway. This will give her some time to 'regroup' or to take care of some task, 'kid free.' This may seem so simple, but as a Mom, I know what 2-3 hours without a kid means....getting a lot done! It can also be as simple as donating the box of clothes in your kids closet to your friend who has a child smaller than yours. You were going to get rid of it anyway, right? Unfortunately finances and lack there of is a key factor in many divorces and in childhood abuse or neglect. By you doing this simple task may relieve some financial stress from your friend. Lastly, if the circumstances are out of your hands, please call and report the abuse or neglect ASAP. For San Bernardino County, you can call the Child Abuse Hot Line at 800-827-8724 or 909- 381-4526. People are People, no matter how small.-Dr. Seuss -Have a fabulous rest of the week! If you recall, I was a little rushed last week and flaked on writing a normal article. I apologize and would like to offer an explanation
Today is the grand opening of a company called "Precious Note." It is a venture that I have been blessed to become a part of and would like to share with all of you.
The story behind the idea starts ten years ago today. A mother dying of ovarian cancer left behind a box for her daughter. The daughter opened the box to find it full of several sheets of paper, each containing a note. Some notes were funny, others bearing advice, but all were written by this mother, with the hope that her daughter would use these precious notes to get her through a life that would be, once again, absent of a mother's loving arms. The daughter, Melissa, was adopted by Vern and Marie Vette, as a baby, and raised as their own. Melissa did not even find out about the adoption until after her mother's passing. She couldn't ask her father about it, because he had deserted them for another woman. All that Melissa was left with were memories of a woman who chose Melissa for her own, and the box of precious notes.
I know that this story seems too dramatic to be true, but it is. I know this because Melissa is my cousin. She has taken her mother's last loving memoirs and decided to make it into something that all parents can do for their own children. When I heard of Melissa's wish to carry on her mother's legacy, I immediately knew that God wanted me to get involved. Melissa and I have been working hard to get our website up and running by April 1st, the anniversary of Marie Vette's passing. Having very minimal experience in web design, it proved to be a challenge. But God's hand was in it, so we succeeded!
I am thrilled to be a part of such a wonderful undertaking and encourage you all to stop by www.preciousnote.com, and check out our little venture! Remember, we know not how many days we will be blessed with and we should take every opportunity to let our kids know how much we love them. Precious Notes can do just that, even after our departure from this life. |
